Julien Guerrier wins the Andalucia Masters 2024

Julien Guerrier ended the long wait for his first title on the DP World Tour with victory at the 2024 Andalucia Masters. It takes nine holes in the playoff to decide a winner…

The numerous spectators at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande experienced an exciting duel on Sunday between the spectator favorite Jorge Campillo and the Frenchman Julien Guerrier (Photo: picture alliance).

The lead changed hands throughout Sunday afternoon before a mammoth playoff was needed to break the tie. Guerrier holed a 5-meter par putt on the 18th hole and was tied with his playing partner at 21 under par after 72 holes.

In the end, it was Guerrier who won on the ninth extra hole by nerve-racking to hole out from two and a half meters. In his 230th start, the Frenchman is entering the winner’s circle for the first time.

Guerrier said: “I feel great and I can’t believe I did it. “I’ve been waiting for this for a really long time. We worked very hard every week for this but had to remain very patient. I know Jorge Campillo is an excellent player, but today it worked out for me, so I’m very happy.”

The lead changed back and forth between Guerrier and Campillo several times throughout the week, and that was also the case in the exciting final round.

Guerrier, who started the day 19 under par, was able to grab a two-shot lead after five holes with three early birdies. Campillo quickly drew level with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes.

Leadership changed back and forth

Jorge Campillo looked like a quick, sure winner after 13, after Guerrier was only able to hole out for double bogey. As a result, Guerrier himself was only able to play pars and was dependent on his opponent’s mistakes.

The otherwise strong-nerved Campillo even managed to do this. A bogey on 15 was followed by an annoying bogey on 18, so that the opponents had to go into a playoff in the first place – it should be a memorable one.

The emotional winner thanked his opponent for the long duel. “I can’t believe it, Jorge is a great player. I knew it would be very difficult because he putts incredibly well. My iron game wasn’t in great shape today either, but my putting was really good.”

Guerrier revealed his final thoughts before the decisive putt. “I tried to do my best and I’m really happy. “On the last putt I thought about my children to give me the strength to hit it, so thanks to my family and my team.”

For winning the Andalucia Masters 2024, Julien Guerrier will receive prize money of 509,516.60 euros. Jorge Campillo can look forward to 329,687.22 euros. Guerrier also moves to 18th place in the Race to Dubai.

The German Marcel Schneider was able to achieve one of the best results of the season. With 13 under par, he finished tied for 12th and received 49,902.66 euros in prize money. Freddy Schott (T28/-9), Matthias Schwab (T36/-8), Bernd Wiesberger (T50/-6) and Maxi Kieffer (T55/-5) also made the cut.
