Illinois man convicted of trafficking fentanyl and supporting ISIS

(NewsNation) — A 42-year-old man from a Chicago suburb was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison earlier this month for trafficking fentanyl and attempting to support the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham.

Jason Brown, of Lombard, Illinois, pleaded guilty last year to one count of attempting to provide material support to ISIS, one count of distribution of fentanyl and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to a news release. Attorney General’s Office, Northern District of Illinois.

Brown was arrested in 2019 after making three $500 cash payments to a person he believed was going to transfer the money to an ISIS soldier in Syria, the release said. However, both individuals were undercover and cooperating with law enforcement.

That same year, the Lombardy resident was caught smuggling fentanyl and other drugs from California to the Chicago suburbs. He was also caught illegally possessing several loaded handguns “in furtherance of his drug trafficking activities.”

Brown was formally sentenced in Chicago on October 16, 2024.
