Former Miss SA in a wheelchair after a terrible accident

Kerishnie Naiker, best known for winning the title of Miss South Africa in 1997, recently spoke about a freak accident that left her confined to a wheelchair and shared the dangers posed by the digital world.

According to News24, Naiker was seriously injured in May 2024 when a tourist accidentally tripped her while trying to take a selfie.

In a recent Instagram post, the 51-year-old philanthropist, television host and health activist shared details about the tragic incident.

“I was accidentally tripped by a tourist while she was taking photos,” she wrote alongside a photo of herself at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital.

“As she was walking up the stairs from Cape Point Lighthouse, she backed into me and caused me to fall down two steps.

“She was trying to focus on the lighthouse and went one step too far.”

While Naiker added that she was thankful she didn’t suffer a head injury and remained calm, she shared that she suffered a “serious injury.”

Although she has made good progress with the help of rehabilitation, the beauty queen questioned people about the danger of being distracted while taking photos.

I believe it is essential to use this platform to reiterate that we:

1. Do not take photos at risk to others or ourselves
2. Are alert, aware of our surroundings and aware of the situation
3. Enjoy every moment and take it all in without having to look at everything through the lens
4. Be attentive, kind and unconcerned with the well-being of others

“Too many die while taking selfies and filming, and others are injured or killed because of their negligence,” she added.

Since the tragic incident, Naiker, who is also an international speaker, has shared her journey to recovery and shared a message of hope and gratitude with her followers.

“I could write a book about my perspective in a wheelchair, but I will save those stories for another time. Suffice it to say, life can change in an instant.”

“As challenging as the last six months have been, I couldn’t be more grateful for the gift of another day.”
