Anything but low-income!

Anyone who works at the checkout at Aldi earns poorly – at least that’s what many people assume. But is that really true? RTL followed up!

Bad reputation! Cashiers are often considered low-income earners

Customer complaints, time pressure, weekend work – the job as a cashier is tough. And extremely important, as became clear at the latest during the Corona pandemic: Anyone who works in retail makes an important contribution to society and is therefore systemically relevant.

And yet cashiers – especially at discounters – often ridiculed. Not least because in the minds of many people they are labeled as low earners. In terms of wages, those who work in discounters are closer to the bottom than average, which is the widespread assumption.

But that is not the case at all, as the salary information that Aldi RTL provided to RTL shows.

Aldi salaries are considered a “benchmark for the entire industry”

“Aldi Süd employees benefit from very attractive standards and other benefits,” a company spokesman tells us. Aldi Süd pays a nationwide internal minimum wage of 15 euros. For comparison: The statutory minimum wage is currently 12.41 euros gross per hour.

The following applies specifically to cashiers without appropriate training: “Cashiers at ALDI SÜD receive between 15.00 and 19.59 euros.” Assuming a full-time position and an average of 21 working days per month, Aldi Süd cashiers earn a minimum of 2,520 euros and a maximum of 3,291.12 euros gross per month. Christmas and holiday bonuses and possible regional allowances are not yet included.

Trained salespeople earn even better: the hourly wage is between 16.34 and 21.26 euros per hour. Extrapolated, the monthly salary in this position is 2,745.12 euros and 3,571.68 euros gross. With its disadvantages, the company is considered “a benchmark for the entire industry”.
